Left Tuscany

There is the Tuscany that behaves like Bordeaux—sometimes almost literally, with Bordeaux grape varieties—and there is the Tuscany that behaves like Burgundy, with an emphasis on silky fruit purity and bright, elegant flavors. If we had to pick a paragon for this latter style, we might select Montevertine in Chianti. But Brunello has its own worthy contender for the title, and it is Salicutti.

The biggest mark against Salicutti may be its size. It produces only about 10% of the quantities coming from Montevertine—barely enough to be the paragon of anything! But it makes up for it with its sheer quality, as those lovers of Tuscan wine who have gotten to know Salicutti now rank it in the very top echelon.

"The organic Salicutti 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Sorgente (closed in a black wax capsule) is darker in color compared to the Piaggione. This wine also shows a heavier bouquet with some distant aldehydic aromas of dried cherry skin that could cause the bouquet to flatten with time. For that reason, I recommend a near or medium-term drinking window. Enjoy the Sorgente today and put the Piaggione aside for more aging. The tannins are still firm, so that needs some navigating or perhaps a pairing with a cheese or butter-heavy dish. Sorgente is a vigorous and humid parcel with sandy soils, stone and ancient marine fossils." -Robert Parker
