Perched on the rugged foothills of Mount Alaric in Languedoc lies the estate of Domaine Faillenc Sainte-Marie. Tramontane winds blow over Mount Alaric and mix with breezes that come off of the mediterranean to create a very dry, windy environment. That along with the limestone clay soils make for an impossible growing environment for almost anything. The struggling vines produce low yields which leads to concentrated, bold wines. The rough environment is also hostile to many common grape pests which luckily makes it much easier to farm organically, like the domaine does on all eight hectares.Jean-Baptiste Gilbert is the current proprietor having recently taken over care of the estate from his parents Dominique and Marie-Therese Gilbert. Dominique still retains his influence on the wine in his own special way as he personally designs all of the labels. On the other hand, Jean-Baptiste is responsible for having the vineyards certified organic and for expanding the estate. He seems to have big plans for the future as he has announced he is going to increase the number of wines that they produce.
