What is this wine?

Domaine Michel Lafarge, one of the most revered names in Volnay, has been crafting benchmark Burgundy since the 19th century. Today, Frédéric and Chantal Lafarge continue the estate’s legacy of biodynamic farming and traditional, low-intervention winemaking—native yeast fermentations, whole clusters, and aging in neutral oak barrels.
The Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs is the Lafarge family’s treasured monopole, a tiny walled vineyard located in the heart of Volnay village, just behind the family home. With shallow, rocky soils over limestone and vines averaging 50–60 years old, this Premier Cru consistently yields wines of exceptional refinement and longevity.

Why get this wine?

This is the crown jewel of the Lafarge domaine—a wine that epitomizes Volnay’s elegance, perfume, and depth. The 2022 vintage brings radiant fruit and perfectly ripe tannins while maintaining the ethereal balance that defines this site. Produced in minuscule quantities, it is among the most coveted Premier Crus in the Côte de Beaune and a touchstone for lovers of classic Burgundy.

What does this wine taste like?

Pure and graceful, with red cherry, raspberry, rose petal, and fine spice. The palate is silky yet firm, showing crystalline fruit, powdery tannins, and a long, mineral finish of remarkable finesse.

When should you drink this wine?

Drink 2028–2045. Decant for an hour if opened young. Perfect with duck, roast squab, or earthy mushroom dishes.

Lafarge is one of the great names in Volnay, some would say the greatest. His wines are sought out the world over, and we are always excited when our allocation arrives.

Lafarge’s home territory is Volnay, though he also has holdings in nearby Beaune and Meursault. This is an old estate that started bottling their wines in the early 1900s. Only Armand Rousseau, the DRC, and maybe two or three other growers have that kind of history.

The wines of Lafarge are magical. Despite being made in a decidedly old-school style—really no different than a generation or even two ago—they display incredible purity and not a hint of rusticity. It is the same kind of magic that Jacky Truchot was able to conjure. We only wish we could get more.

"Note: from 50+ year old vines; a monopole of the domaine; destemmed manually. A cooler and more restrained nose is also wonderfully spicy with its more floral-suffused aromas of essence of red currant, cherry and lavender. The super-sleek and refined middleweight flavors are beautifully delineated, indeed the word chiseled comes to mind, and flash a borderline aggressive minerality on the youthfully austere, firm and focused finale that goes on and on. This is presently not quite as complex as the Caillerets or Clos des Chênes but it's a wine that always needs time to develop so a minimum of 7 to 8 years of keeping are in order.*Burghound Sweet Spot Outstanding!"

"The 2022 Volnay Clos du Château des Ducs 1er Cru, which was de-stemmed by hand like the Pitures and Caillerets, has a very delineated bouquet, exquisite red berry fruit laced with crushed stone and rose petals. Very precise. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine tannins framing the slightly austere red fruit. Good grip. It veers more towards sapid black fruit with a touch of licorice on the aftertaste. Long-term. Superb." -Neal Martin

"Aromas of plums, sweet red berries, peonies, rose petals and dried orange rind preface Lafarge's 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs, a medium to full-bodied, rich and enveloping wine that's velvety and layered, with powdery tannins, succulent acids and an attractively complete, seamless profile." -William Kelley

"This 'super-cuvée' of the Lafarge cellar comes from vines behind the winery, with which they take extraordinary pains. The grapes are all destemmed by hand. The result is a wine of superb concentration and depth, with intensely perfumed black cherry fruit aromas and earth, star anise, violets and black tea notes. The texture on the palate is lively and vibrant, with abundant extract, supple but supportive tannins, and exceptional length. The 2022 vintage is on par with the best I have tasted from this site.(CC)"
