These are cerebral, thought-provoking wines that benefit from cellaring. They’re racy and super-fresh, vibrating with Riesling tension. I probably wouldn’t offer a bottle of Weiser-Künstler to a Mosel newbie, someone looking for plush stone fruit and a hefty dose of sugar. These are wines for wine lovers, patient drinkers, and anyone interested in what old vines from one of the world’s most difficult terrains can yield.
Rare for the region, Weiser-Künstler is certified organic. They employ no mechanization in the vines, nor could they, if they wanted. The slopes are simply too steep and unforgiving. Konstantin and Alexandra may not have vines in the most famous vineyards, but they’ve worked tirelessly to highlight this unassuming yet truly great terroir. Ellergrub, Gaispfad and Steffensberg are home to old (80-100 years of age), ungrafted vines; the wines coming from these sites are truly special.
