What is this wine?
Domaine Gilbert Picq & Fils, based in Chichée, is a family-run estate renowned for producing pure, mineral-driven Chablis. En Vaudécorce is a single-vineyard bottling from the village-level appellation, grown on classic Kimmeridgian limestone soils. Vinified entirely in stainless steel, it showcases Picq’s hallmark style: precise, unoaked Chardonnay that emphasizes terroir over winemaking. The 2023 vintage produced fresh, balanced wines with excellent fruit and bright acidity.

Why get this wine?
Picq’s lieu-dit bottlings, like En Vaudécorce, are insider favorites—offering extra depth and site character at only a small step up from their straight Chablis. This is a brilliant way to explore Chablis terroir without the price of premier cru, delivering serious mineral tension, clarity, and value.

What does this wine taste like?
Vivid lemon and green apple with notes of white flowers, oyster shell, and a chalky, saline edge. Crisp and linear, with added concentration and length compared to the domaine’s basic Chablis.

When should you drink this wine?
Best from now through 2028. Perfect with oysters, shrimp, sashimi, or simple roast chicken. Serve chilled to highlight its freshness.

Domaine Gilbert Picq is everything that’s going right in Chablis these days.

It all begins and ends with how the wine tastes, of course, and Picq’s Chablis is a delicious, straight up expression of Chablisienne terroir. It has the famous minerality. And it has the bright acid drive that keeps the wine fresh on hot days.

The Picqs do this by taking the whole project seriously--like the best of today's Chablis--investing the time, energy and money to do things right. Pascal Picq (the brother in charge of the vines) keeps yields low with aggressive winter pruning and summer crop thinning. So there's less wine, but it's more concentrated with Chablis goodness. They harvest by hand (rarer than you'd think, in Chablis).

Didier Picq (the cellar brother) vinifies with natural yeasts and permits no oak in the process: nothing that might distract from the terroir or the fruit.

"An interesting nose reflects notes of green tea, iodine, crushed fennel and green apple. There is slightly better volume, and noticeably more power to the energetic medium-bodied flavors that also exude evident minerality on the clean, dry and youthfully austere finale. This well-made effort almost always punches above its weight and this version should be no different. If you can find it, buy it as villages-level Chablis doesn't get much better than this in 2023."

"The 2023 Chablis Vaudécorse is much more expressive than the Vauclaire at the moment, a mixture of white and yellow fruit with a touch of flintiness underneath. The palate is quite attacking on the entry, tensile and focused. It gradually builds toward a cohesive and satisfying finish. This has similar potential to the excellent 2022." -Neal Martin
