What is this wine?
Cerbaiona’s Rosso di Montalcino 2022 is a pure Sangiovese Grosso from one of Tuscany’s most revered small estates. Nestled on the eastern slopes of Montalcino, Cerbaiona was founded by Diego Molinari and is now overseen by a new generation dedicated to preserving the estate’s traditional, low-intervention style. The 2022 Rosso comes from younger vines and declassified Brunello fruit grown on marl and limestone soils. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in large Slavonian oak casks, it’s a transparent, terroir-driven expression of Montalcino.

Why get this wine?
Cerbaiona produces some of the most soulful and sought-after Brunellos in Tuscany, and its Rosso di Montalcino offers a glimpse of that pedigree in a more approachable form. The 2022 vintage, marked by freshness and balance, yields a wine of vivid fruit, fine structure, and unmistakable elegance—a perfect everyday Brunello alternative for collectors and newcomers alike.

What does this wine taste like?
Fragrant and pure, with aromas of red cherry, dried rose, and sweet herbs. The palate is medium-bodied and vibrant, showing lively red fruit, polished tannins, and a long, mineral-tinged finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Drink now through 2032 for its energy and finesse. Decant 30 minutes before serving. Ideal with pasta al ragù, roast poultry, or aged Pecorino.

Montalcino's twin peaks are Soldera and Biondi-Santi, but there's a small handful of estates that are gaining reputations as being right behind those two super-stars. At the top of the list is Cerbaiona. Diego Molinari, former owner and winemaker, has a similar story to Gianfranco. He retired after 25 years as an Alitalia pilot and bought a small estate in Montalcino in the late '70s. He has always been committed to traditional, "hands-off" winemaking. The wines are fermented with native yeasts in concrete and aged in large oak casks. The result is world-class Sangiovese, aromatic, elegantly-fruited and balanced by good structure and underlying savory minerality.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino is wonderfully perfumed, casting a blend of roses, violets and crushed blackberries. A stone dust hint adds lovely complexity. This is elegant in style and remarkably pure, showing depths of cherry-berry fruit guided by a wave of vibrant acidity. The 2022 leaves a salty, mineral flourish while tapering off long and gently tannic. Crisp in feel, with resonating blue and purple inner florals. This is already quite likable, yet it also has the balance to excel in the cellar over the medium term." -Eric Guido

"Pretty and plump, the Salvioni 2022 Rosso di Montalcino La Cerbaiola shows the softness and richness of this warm and sunny vintage. However, the wine is also extremely faithful to the variety, so you get the sharpness and the interesting angles that are typical of traditionally made Sangiovese made in stainless steel. This is a release of 10,970 bottles." -Monica Larner
