Guímaro: The Story of a Landscape in Three Wines
From the very beginning at Flatiron, Guímaro has been our benchmark for Mencía—and for the promise of Ribeira Sacra. Long before the region made its way onto the radar of sommeliers and collectors, we were obsessed with the wines: bright, earthy, and etched with the wild slate and granite terrain of Galicia’s steep river valleys.
What makes Pedro Rodríguez’s wines so compelling is how clearly they articulate a sense of place. And just like the best domaines in Burgundy, Guímaro’s lineup offers a structured view of the region, starting with a regional expression, moving through a more complex village-level bottling, and culminating in a single-vineyard cru that rivals the best age-worthy reds in Spain.
The journey begins with the 2023 Tinto, Pedro’s most accessible and immediate wine. It’s fermented in stainless steel and bottled young, with a profile that leans into juicy red fruit, wild herbs, and vibrant acidity. With its low alcohol and crunchy texture, it’s a pure, chillable expression of Ribeira Sacra—meant to be opened without ceremony but not without admiration.
From there, Camino Real 2020 deepens the story. Sourced from multiple high-elevation parcels across the region and aged in foudre (large barrels), it offers more concentration, structure, and a darker register of fruit. The mineral backbone is unmistakable, and the extra time on lees brings a subtle savory depth. If the Tinto is a snapshot, Camino Real is a landscape—complex, layered, and built for mid-term aging (and this one is now 5 years old!.
And then there’s Finca Meixeman 2021, a single-vineyard wine from the family's oldest parcel. Grown on impossibly steep, terraced slopes and fermented with some whole clusters in open-top wood vats, it represents the pinnacle of Pedro’s work. This is where Mencía becomes something truly grand: precise, structured, and deeply expressive of its origin. While delicious now, it promises even more with time in the cellar.
We’ve carried Guímaro for over a decade, and every new vintage reminds us why. These are wines of clarity and place, made with humility and vision, and they continue to define what makes Ribeira Sacra one of the most exciting wine regions in Europe today.
Guimaro Ribeira Sacra Camino Real 2020 - $26.99
" I tasted the 2020 Camiño Real that somehow I had never tasted before. It has a more developed nose, and the primary and ripe notes are giving way to more tertiary aromas of meat and decayed leaves and forest floor. It feels ripe, and the label confesses 13.5% alcohol, one degree higher than in cooler years. It fermented with 60% full clusters in troncoconic oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in 5,000-liter oak vats and 500-liter barrels for 10 to 12 months. It's polished and ready. RP 93. "- Luis Gutiérrez (Robert Parker)
Guimaro Ribeira Sacra Mencia Tinto 2023 - $24.99
" The 2023 Tinto Guímaro is composed of 85% Mencía and 15% other varieties, with 70% of the grapes sourced from Río Sil and 30% from Miño. Aged for nine months on lees, the 2023 is a light red full of flavor, offering notes of raspberry, strawberry, elderberry, herbs and a touch of floral aromas. Expressive and intriguing, it finishes with a slight sanguine character and a whisper of stems, delivering a refreshing and cleansing profile. 91-93 pts. " - Joaquín Hidalgo (Vinous)
Guimaro Ribeira Sacra Finca Meixeman 2021 - $44.99
" The 2021 Guímaro Meixemán, also 70% Mencía from the Meixemán parcel, was aged for one year in barrels and foudres. It opens with sanguine raspberry, elderberry and light plum notes, framed by a hint of herbs. On the palate, it is lean, vibrant and clean, with a long finish and a light structure. The 2021 has great energy and delivers flavor without excess despite its ripe profile. 95pts. " - Joaquín Hidalgo (Vinous)
