Guimaro Ribeira Sacra Finca Meixeman 2021

Seventy-year-old Mencía vines planted on schist at 450 meters yield wines of remarkable purity and vibrancy. The 2021 opens with sanguine raspberry and elderberry, deepening into lean, clean flavors with light structure and a long finish. Fermented with full clusters and aged in used oak—modern winemaking honoring old vines in Spain's most exciting region.

"The 2021 Guímaro Meixemán, also 70% Mencía from the Meixemán parcel, was aged for one year in barrels and foudres. It opens with sanguine raspberry, elderberry and light plum notes, framed by a hint of herbs. On the palate, it is lean, vibrant and clean, with a long finish and a light structure. The 2021 has great energy and delivers flavor without excess despite its ripe profile." —Joaquín Hidalgo

"The single-vineyard 2021 Finca Meixeman, produced with the grapes from one of the oldest family vineyards with soils of granite and slate, showed superb. It's perfumed, subtle and ethereal, light to medium-bodied but with lots of energy and light. It's 70% Mencía with 30% other grapes and achieved a moderate 13% alcohol in this cooler and rainier year whose freshness is reflected in the wine here. It fermented with 65% full clusters and had a 50-day maceration, then it aged in used 225- and 500-liter French oak barrels for 10 to 12 months." —Luis Gutiérrez

More about Guimaro

“Guimaro”, a Gallego word for rebel, could not be a more apt name for this great winery in the Amandi zone of the Ribeira Sacra. Twice before Guimaro rebelled against regional norms and are now releasing the fruits of their third rebellion.

The first rebellion was back in 1991, when Pedro Rodriguez transformed his parent's humble farm into a small estate producing D.O. wines available internationally. He was one of the true pioneers that pulled Ribeira Sacra out of its backwoods status.

The second rebellion occurred when Pedro met the great Raul Perez of Bierzo. Perez encouraged Pedro to work with old vines of indigenous varieties — especially Mencia — low yields and organic farming. Pedro starting making world-class wines sought out the world over. He became the star of the village of Amandi, and one of the crown jewels in José Pastor's amazing import portfolio of Spanish wines.

But recently Pedro has had some concerns as well as some new inspirations. As the climate continues to grow warmer he became concerned about his Mencia becoming over-ripe in his vineyards situated on Amandi’s incredibly steep, sun-facing vineyards. Like Pinot Noir and other delicate grapes, too much heat can lead to Mencia losing its focus, thus developing overripe flavors. The inspiration came from French wine, particularly the traditional method of making Cru Beaujolais using wooden casks with whole clusters.
