Ahhh, the Northern Rhône Valley. For wine lovers this rugged, mountainous region of southern France is the holy grail of Syrah. Just below Beaujolais and greater Burgundy, it encapsulates some of the elegance and pedigree of its northern neighbors, yet the grapes and the terroir here are entirely unique. There is a wildness and exuberance of nature or “sauvage” that is only hinted at in Burgundy, but the complexity and aging potential of these wines is as great as any.
