Born into a winemaking family (his father was director of the Cave de Saint-Desirat, the preeminent wine cooperative of the region), Jean-Baptiste Souillard knew from a young age that he was going to be a winemaker. After earning multiple degrees in oenology and working for others (most notably doing internships at both Château Latour and Comte Armand), what finally brought him to make his own wine was a frustration that Syrah from the Northern Rhône was, more often than not, being made from grapes blended from many sites, rather than in the single-site tradition of Burgundy. His philosophy is "one parcel, one wine," and the wines reflect just that.
