Jean-Francois Jacouton Syrah A Deux Pas 2023

$2999

From Ardèche in the northern Rhône, Jean-François Jacouton creates a Syrah with real soul—old-school, clean, and precise. Made from 35-year-old vines on granite and alluvial soils, it channels black pepper, damp earth, and dark fruit into a wine that tastes like the place it comes from. Perfect if you want Rhône Syrah that rewards attention without demanding explanation.

More about Jean-Francois Jacouton

The Northern Rhône is having its own Grower movement. Like in Champagne (or a generation earlier, in Burgundy), grape production and wine production were for the most part separated. Most farmers grew grapes alongside apricots and other crops and sold them off to local cooperatives and négociants.

But, like in Champagne, this all changed in the 21st century. As new generations took over, they stopped selling off their grapes, and they started making their own wines. And in doing so, they followed the models offered by some of the greatest names in the region – Gonon, Chave, etc.

Jean-François Jacouton became the next generation to own some very special parcels of vines in Saint-Joseph back in 2003. He grew up among those vines, helping his grandfather with the farming. He spent a few years learning to make wine – Rene Rostaing is among his mentors. Then in 2010 he started making and bottling his own production.

We tasted Jacouton’s wines for the first time recently. Luckily, we were offered a wine that had already had a few years of cellaring, and it was drinking great! Syrah’s natural wildness had calmed down some and mellowed into a lovely, red-fruited wine with meaty notes, spice and smoke, and just enough fallen-leaf notes from bottle age to make it a really captivating wine.

Jacouton could produce this beauty mostly because of terroir. He inherited vines in the historic core of Saint-Joseph, including holdings just above Gonon’s famous old vines plot (acquired from Raymond Trollat). Respect for Gonon is reflected in the wine-making: everything is traditional and classical, with hardly any new oak, large vessels (including some amphorae), and minimal interventions.

This is what makes the Northern Rhône so exciting: new vignerons, reclaiming old vines in incredible terroirs to produce brand new wines that are inspired by old masters.
