Domaine Jamet Cote-Rotie 2023

$22499

The reference point in Côte-Rôtie, and one of the greatest names in France. Jean-Paul Jamet has been at it since 1976 - he was sixteen - and while Gentaz retired and Guigal went its own way, Jamet has held the line on traditional Côte-Rôtie. Holdings span the appellation's storied sites: Fongeant, Chavaroche, Les Moutonnes, La Landonne, Côte Blonde, Côte Rozier, Côte Brune. Like Chave in Hermitage, he blends them all together for a complete portrait of the appellation. Almost entirely whole-cluster fermentation, aged in demi-muids rather than barriques - so the wine keeps its perfume, its lift, its Syrah-ness. The 2023 grand vin draws from as many as twenty parcels. This is Côte-Rôtie at its purest.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Côte-Rôtie begins with pronounced black cherry, forest strawberry and dried violets. A touch of red plum adds further fruit complexity. Midweighted and concentrated, the 2023 shows brilliantly at this youthful stage, delivering fruit-driven allure, ultra-refined tannins and outstanding length. The 2023 jumps at you right away, and while there is assured ageing potential, it will be quite hard to resist in its youth. Outstanding." —Nicolas Greinacher

"A tasting of the constituent barrels, so this is a provisional score. Gerine has a touch of cold-fireplace aroma from the stems, the tannins are quite strict and the fruit is fresh; it’s tense. Lésardes and Cumelle show some slightly confit-grape scents and a touch of cassis. Tense and fresh, with good acidity and grippy, slightly grainy tannins that are a touch underripe. Truchet is a cooler terroir, showing a touch of white pepper. It’s fuller and more generous in fruit – juicy blackberry – with softer tannins, but still very fresh and tense. Tartaras and Bonnivières had an October harvest; showing beautiful floral expression, with good ripe fruit and tannins and more richness, but it’s still so fresh. Gerine and Moutonnes are showing peat and iodine notes. It’s silky, with good ripe fruit and tannins and a powerful finish. Fongeant has notes of lavender and violet, then it’s very fresh, silky and attractive – just lovely. Le Plan is fuller-bodied, more classic warm-vintage fruit, with great acidity and tannins. Côte Blonde, Côte Bodin and Leya are lifted, silky, pure, complete and beautiful. Landonne is a relatively fine and fresh expression, not as austere as it can be. Virtually all whole bunches this year. Overall, this is looking like a fresh, elegant vintage, in a fairly classic style, rather than the bolder wines that have typified the past eight years. It promises serious complexity in the long term." —Matt Walls

More about Domaine Jamet

Domaine Jamet is a reference point in Côte-Rôtie. Their holdings read like a “who’s who” of top vineyard sites in the AOC, including names like Fongeant, Chavaroche, Les Moutonnes, La Landonne, Côte Blonde, Côte Rozier, and Côte Brune. Like Chave in Hermitage, he generally likes to blend all all the sites together to present a wine that is a truly complete Côte-Rôtie, taking advantage of all that the different terroirs have to offer. (He does reserve a tiny number of berries for a separate Côte Brune bottling that is rarely seen.)

This practice of blending vineyard sites is an old tradition in the Northern Rhone, consistent with Jamet’s general approach in the winery. His Côte-Rôtie is almost all whole cluster. He uses no barriques, opting instead for the larger demi-muids. The other big names who made wines like this in Côte-Rôtie have either retired (Gentaz) or changed course (Guigal). Jamet — specifically Jean-Paul Jamet, who’s been at it since he was a 16 year old boy in 1976 — has stuck it out.
