Serol Turbullent: A Pet-Nat Rose Delight
Turbullent is amongst the most charming and joyful wines out there. Produced by Domaine Serol in the little known Cote Roannaise, it speaks to the region's relaxed attitude and joie de vivre. Gamay is king in the Cote Ronnaisse and Serol, whose history dates back to the 18th century, is dedicated to growing the locally adapted Gamay Saint Romain.
Gamay Saint Romain tends to have smaller bunches and berries that are more prone to millerandage than Beaujolais’ more commonly planted Gamay à jus noir. This often translates to a more concentrated expression of the fruit. Certified organic for many years, the estate has begun the slow process of converting to biodynamic with the goal of being demeter certified.
All of that effort produces incredibly expressive wines that are amongst our favorite examples of Gamay. Turbullent, a sparkling Rosé made using the Ancestral Method (pet-nat), is no exception. A vivid garnet pink in the glass, the nose is pure pleasure. Intoxicating aromas of fresh cut flowers, raspberries, and pear blossom spill out of the bottle as soon as you pop the cork. On the palate, flavors of red apple skin and tart stone fruit combine with thirsts quenching, acutely balanced acidity and precise, persistent bubbles.
Turbullent is well loved in the bay and is a favorite by the glass pour at some of our most innovative and exciting restaurants. It can charm on its own, and we have downed many bottles this way, but it is truly among the most versatile of bubbles. Great with summer salads and almost any cheese, it is also a staff favorite to wash down a plate of spicy Szechuan or Oaxacan food.
Supplies of this perfect summer sparkler are limited and since this season's supply just landed we suggest you stock up now if you want to make it through the hottest part of the year. No biggie if you end up with a little extra; Turbullent is also the perfect pool party pounder!
