What is this wine?
Domaine Leflaive is one of Burgundy’s most legendary domaines, producing benchmark white wines from Puligny-Montrachet and surrounding crus. Les Combettes is a premier cru that borders Meursault, with clay-limestone soils that yield wines marrying Puligny’s tension and minerality with Meursault’s rounder, more generous fruit. The 2020 vintage was warm but balanced, producing concentrated, structured whites with superb energy and long-term cellaring potential.

Why get this wine?
Leflaive’s name is synonymous with the very best of white Burgundy. Their Combettes combines the domaine’s meticulous biodynamic farming and precise winemaking with one of Puligny’s most characterful terroirs. In the excellent 2020 vintage, this wine has both immediate appeal and decades of life ahead—making it a collectible treasure for serious Burgundy drinkers.

What does this wine taste like?
Ripe pear, peach, and citrus with notes of hazelnut, acacia blossom, and chalky minerality. Rich and layered, with vibrant acidity and a long, saline, elegant finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Best 2025–2040. Decant if drinking young. Superb with lobster, scallops, roast chicken, or creamy risotto.

There are many outstanding producers of white Burgundy. When it comes to Puligny Montrachet one name is at the pinnacle - Domaine Leflaive. For many generations of the family and of Burgundy lovers they have been the one you want in your cellar. These are some of the most consistent and long lived white Burgundies from the Bourgogne Blanc, to the Puligny Montrachet, to the premier and grand crus. These are wines you can cellar for many years with complete confidence.

Anne-Claude Leflaive and her right-hand man Pierre Morey were pioneers of biodynamic farming. After seven years of experiments while the property was two-thirds organic and one third biodynamic, all of the vineyards were converted to biodynamic in 1997.

The farming is immaculate, there are constant improvements of the pruning, composting and cultivation of cover crops. Most of the vines were planted in the 1950's and 1980's, the vines are mature. The cellar work is slow and measured, the wines rest for at least two winters in their cold cellars, first in barrel, then in stainless steel tanks for the second winter. There is a maximum of 20% new oak for the premier crus. They are always working to make even greater wines.

"Firm reduction masks the nuance of what appears to be ripe fruit. The middle weight flavors possess a highly sophisticated mouthfeel that is at once delicate but quite punchy while exuding a subtle minerality on the bone-dry finale that just goes one and on. This compact and very tightly wound effort makes it unequivocally clear that this is built to reward extended keeping and like the Folatières, it possesses enormous presence."

"The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru has a more reserved, oyster shell-tinged bouquet that demonstrates more sophistication and nuance compared to Dujac's Combettes. There's almost something Chablis-like about this Puligny, with hints of algae/kelp. However, the aromatics cloud over with some reductive elements. The palate is well-balanced with a lovely slice of sour lemon, fresh and vibrant, tangy with an overtly saline, almost peppery finish. Here, I seek a little more focus and a sense of direction, yet it remains an enticing prospect. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting." -Neal Martin

"The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes once again dares to challenge—and to my palate, surpass—Leflaive's Pucelles. Exhibiting aromas of peach, pear, nutmeg, pastry cream and white flowers, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with racy acids, chalky structuring extract and a long, resonant finish. This old-vine parcel was reprieved from planned replanting several years ago, and today's farming choices mean that it's going strong." -William Kelley

"Tank sample. Really lovely, sweet, concentrated fruit. Cusp of maturity, with incisive, crystalline acidity."

"A lean, racy white, with lemon, stone and apple flavors fused to a steely structure. Perhaps a bit too lean in the end, but if that's your thing, this is austere and bracing. Shows terrific length."
