What is this wine?

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey (PYCM), based in Chassagne-Montrachet, is one of Burgundy’s most revered producers of white wine, known for crafting precise, ageworthy Chardonnays that express terroir with rare clarity. Since founding his domaine in 2005, Pierre-Yves has worked with low yields, minimal intervention, and native fermentations, using larger 350L barrels and avoiding bâtonnage to preserve tension and purity.
The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru “Clos Saint-Jean” 2023 comes from a steep, rocky vineyard situated above the village, where thin limestone soils and excellent drainage give wines of exceptional energy and minerality. The fruit is hand-harvested, whole-cluster pressed, and aged on fine lees in mostly used oak for about 18 months.

Why get this wine?

“Clos Saint-Jean” is one of PYCM’s most vibrant and lifted Chassagne Premier Crus, offering a perfect balance of concentration and tension. The 2023 vintage shows beautiful harmony—ripe orchard fruit framed by linear acidity and flinty minerality. This is quintessential PYCM: power delivered through precision, with tremendous cellaring potential.

What does this wine taste like?

Expressive and pure, with lemon curd, white peach, hazelnut, and crushed stone. The palate is taut yet layered, with saline minerality and a long, detailed finish that lingers with citrus and chalk notes.

When should you drink this wine?

Drink 2027–2040. Decant if opened young to reveal aromatic complexity. Excellent with lobster, scallops, or creamy poultry dishes.

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey became a star for all kinds of reasons.

Partly, it was because he was an early master of a style of white Burgundy that has now become very popular: less oaky (thanks in part to larger barrels), no lees-stirring, earlier picked, a bit more reductive. The aim is not to make the fat wines that were still popular when he was starting out, but rather expressive wines that were chiseled and precise. His wines do all of this so well that he persuaded the rest of us to go along for the ride.

He also became a star because of critical acclaim, and it was the right kind of critical acclaim for the moment. Way back in 2008 Jancis Robinson wrote up PYCM and headlined it: “Making Chassagne more like Riesling”, capturing the style of these wines perfectly. Only Jancis could make a star of Klaus-Peter Keller by comparing his Rieslings to white Burgundy and a star of PYCM by comparing his white Burgundies to Riesling!

But we think he also became a star for a reason that some may overlook: he has long been a champion of Burgundy’s so-called lesser terroirs, and he has been able to make from them incredible wines that can reach a larger audience.
