Primitivo is a close sibling of Zinfandel but not actually the same grape. Both come from the Croatian grape Crljenak, but they each present a different style of wine here in California. Primitivo is dark skinned and known for its lovely tannins, robust alcohol, and inky color. But this is Raft Wines and they do it a little differently. A lighter version, with lower alcohol than most of its contemporaries, but still has rich tannin and a gorgeous fruit profile of bouncy wild berries and a bit of chaparral shrubbery keeping it all in check. This is from Sam Bilbro’s Fox Hill Vineyard, perhaps the best source of Italian varieties in all of California. The fog shrouded fruit in talented hands produces a Primitivo whose lushness is balanced out by fresh and bright fruit through a long and deeply satisfying finish. This is all pleasure no pain!

It's been very satisfying to see the growth of food friendly affordable wines made from obscure varieties right here in California. Among the very best We've had the privilege to tipple are the wines of Jennifer Reichardt. Her family has been in the food industry in California since 1901, instilling in her a passion for hard work, respect for agriculture, and an entrepreneurial spirit. Reichardt brings all those qualities to Raft.

The winery is based in Sonoma, but Reichardt sources grapes for her wines from vineyards located all over California, including El Dorado, Sonoma, Mendocino, and Madera Counties. Her wines prove that price is not synonymous with quality.

Meticulous fruit is picked at the edge of ripeness which keeps acid high and flavors bright. Picking early also keeps the alcohol levels low. All of these qualities work to make these incredible food friendly.

All of her fruit comes from organic vineyards, often considerably more sustainable than regulations require. winemaking is minimal as she tries to stay out of the way of the exceptional fruit she purchases. It's evident in how terroir-driven these wines are especially at these price points.
