What is this wine?
Domaine de Montille, a historic Volnay estate now led by Étienne de Montille, is renowned for producing refined, terroir-driven Burgundies. Les Mitans is a premier cru at the heart of Volnay, with mid-slope limestone and marl soils that yield wines of finesse and aromatic complexity. The 2019 vintage was exceptional in Burgundy, producing concentrated yet balanced reds with depth, vibrancy, and serious aging potential.

Why get this wine?
De Montille’s style—focused, elegant, and precise—aligns perfectly with Volnay’s naturally delicate, perfumed expression of Pinot Noir. Les Mitans is a benchmark site, and in the superb 2019 vintage, it delivers both early charm and long cellar life. For Burgundy collectors, this is an insider’s bottle that marries pedigree with authenticity.

What does this wine taste like?
Red cherry, raspberry, and cranberry with notes of rose petal, spice, and chalky minerality. Silky and lifted, with fine tannins, bright acidity, and a long, perfumed finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Best 2025–2040. Decant young bottles for full expression. Excellent with roast chicken, duck breast, or mushroom dishes.

The 17th Century Chateau named for this world-famous Chardonnay producing village has changed hands many times during its history. In 2001 the owners hired Etienne de Montille, son of famous Côte-de-Beaune wine maker Hubert Montille, to take over farming and production. He immediately instituted changes in the vineyards and cellar and began turning "good" wines in to great ones.

In 2012 Etienne and his sister Alix (a star winemaker too) purchased the property so it is now officially in the Montille Family of wines. It's a perfect marriage of an iconic estate to a renowned and highly pedigreed family domaine. Indeed the name "Montille" is itself an iconic brand in Burgundy now.

Why? What’s so great about the de Montille wines? Everything. Attention to every detail: in the farming, the winemaking, even the corks they use. They are biodynamic, which works particularly well in a clos with no neighbors to spray chemicals on nearby rows. They harvest by hand, age in a mix of woods, and manage to make all the tiny little choices that individually are hard to identify as so important but that, aggregated, are what make great wines great.

"The 2019 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru went through malolactic on the skins during fermentation and is 100% whole cluster. It offers crunchy, tertiary red berry fruit on the nose; plenty of sous-bois here. The palate is medium-bodied with peppery black fruit, the whole stem component a little too prominent for me and rather defining this Loire-like Volnay on the finish." -Neal Martin

"This 0.72ha vineyard is located in sandy limestone soils near the northern edge of the village. Fermented, as is the custom, exclusively with whole clusters, to give a wine with dark mulberry fruit and an edge of wild herbs. The feel on the palate is tannic, structured and long; this will surely open well with a bit of time."
