The wines of Domaine Patrick Jasmin are consistently some of the very best values in traditional Northern Rhone Syrah. Indeed they're some of the best values in top tier wine anywhere in France. How does Patrick make textbook, old-school but elegant wines every vintage at prices that seem to have barely budged in 2 decades? I actually have no idea. I do know that Patrick took charge of his family's already prestigious estate in 1999 when he was quite young, after his father was tragically hit by a car while hunting. The only thing that Patrick does differently from his father and grandfather is to de-stem the special, serine clone Syrah before it goes into the fermentation tank. That's it, everything in the steep vineyards is done by hand. Everything in the cellar is also by hand, or foot for the stomping, and aging is in mostly neutral barrels of various sizes. No tricks needed here, since Patrick has excellent, old vine parcels of said serrine clone he can just let them speak for themselves.
