Arnoux-Lachaux’s 2018 Les Chaumes is a Premier Cru Vosne-Romanée shaped by sixth-generation winemaker Charles Lachaux. The estate, long based in Vosne, now follows a biodynamic-inspired approach with low yields and careful canopy management.

The Pinot Noir sees high whole-cluster use and gentle extraction, then ages in mostly used barrels. A precise, structured take on one of Vosne’s most approachable premier crus.

Professional Reviews

"Here the elegant and pure nose is notably more floral-inflected than any of the preceding wines with its spicy array of lavender, violet and rose petal along with ripe red cherry liqueur scents. The mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is also quite sleek and refined with a lovely sense of underlying tension suffusing the lingering finish where the only nit is that it leans out a bit as it sits on the palate. Still, this should be very good in time."

"The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has a winsome bouquet of perfumed raspberry, crushed strawberry and rose petal aromas that boast exquisite delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, vibrant red and black fruit and a very linear, vivid finish that conveys a sense of coiled energy. Superb." -Neal Martin

"The 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes wafts from the glass with an inviting bouquet of peonies, sweet red berries, orange rind, raw cocoa and spices. Medium to full-bodied, pretty and expressive, the wine is lively and charming on the palate, with a delicate core of perfumed fruit and melting tannins, concluding with a long and precise finish." -William Kelley

"Close to La Tache, Les Chaumes has fairly rich clay soils, which is reflected in the weightiness of the wine. However, the nose is perky and lively, with bright cherry and raspberry fruit. Bold tannins ensure there is more grip and depth than the upfront nose suggests. There's an underlying limpidity but no lack of structure. The finish is long, with lingering Indian spices."
