From 85-year-old vines in Genevrières—one of Meursault's finest Premier Cru vineyards, named for the juniper (genévrier) that once grew in its limestone soils. Domaine Ballot-Millot has been rooted in Meursault since the late 18th century; Charles Ballot, the 17th generation, took over in 2000 and initiated a quality renaissance. He works organically, follows the lunar cycle in the cellar, and keeps new oak to a maximum of 25%. Wines age 12 months in barrel, then six months in tank—a philosophy of finesse over power, in the tensile, racy Roulot school of Meursault. The 2019 vintage was harvested September 14 and showed surprising freshness despite warm conditions.

Ballot-Millot et Fils is an outstanding domaine in Meursault with phenomenal holdings in the village's top crus, Charles Ballot is producing precise, tensile, racy yet exuberant wines. There is very little new oak used. These are modern white Burgundies, they are transparent and reflect their respective terroirs.

Charles has been in charge of the farming, winemaking, and cellar work since 2001. His grandparents started the domaine, and he inherited additional vines from his mother, who is related to the Lochardet-Dancer family. He farms according to lutte raisonnée — he works as organically as he can without sacrificing the crop. New oak is limited to 15% for village wines and up to 25% for the premier crus. The wines are bottled after about 16 months in barrel.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

BH 94
"A spicy and naturally exotic nose freely offers up notes of tea, white flowers and pretty essence of pear wisps. There is again terrific cut and intensity to the even more mineral-driven medium weight flavors that are shaped by bright and firm acidity on the sappy and hugely long finish. This is quite dense and unusually powerful for Genevrières." -Allen Meadows

"The 2019 Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru shows a slight reduction on the nose (like a couple of others) underneath crisp, delineated citrus fruit, crushed stone and blackcurrant leaf. The palate is well-balanced with a slightly viscous opening, lightly spiced with ginger and lemongrass. It has a gentle grip with a saline, Charmes-like finish that lingers. However, it does seem to fade and lose just a bit of definition with time. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting." -Neal Martin
