If any Meursault vineyard deserves Grand Cru status, it's Perrières—named for the stone quarries (perrières) that once supplied building material for local villages. The thin, rocky soils with high limestone content produce wines of striking minerality and intensity, quite different from the rounder, silkier Genevrières. Charles Ballot's 2019 from this vineyard shows extra-wide flavor clarity with perfumed aromatics and a finish that expands in waves, longer and more persistent than the Genevrières. Same winemaking approach: organic, lunar-cycle cellar, maximum 25% new oak, 12 months barrel, six months tank.

Ballot-Millot et Fils is an outstanding domaine in Meursault with phenomenal holdings in the village's top crus, Charles Ballot is producing precise, tensile, racy yet exuberant wines. There is very little new oak used. These are modern white Burgundies, they are transparent and reflect their respective terroirs.

Charles has been in charge of the farming, winemaking, and cellar work since 2001. His grandparents started the domaine, and he inherited additional vines from his mother, who is related to the Lochardet-Dancer family. He farms according to lutte raisonnée — he works as organically as he can without sacrificing the crop. New oak is limited to 15% for village wines and up to 25% for the premier crus. The wines are bottled after about 16 months in barrel.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2019 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has a complex bouquet that blossoms in the glass: mineral-driven citrus fruit, grilled hazelnuts, dandelion and nettle. The aromatics here are very involving and keep dragging you back to the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, exquisite poise and delicate furnishings of stem ginger, lemon rind and crushed stone. It maintains precision through its tensile finish, which contains the sapidity to draw you back for another sip immediately. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting." -Neal Martin
