Emrich-Schönleber is a Nahe benchmark estate known for crystalline, site-expressive Rieslings. “Frühtau” 2021 is sourced from younger vines in the grand Frühlingsplätzchen site near Monzingen. Though labeled Ortswein, it’s made like a GG: native-yeast fermentation and aging in large neutral oak.

This dry Riesling shows bright citrus, herbal lift, and saline minerality with firm acidity and just 12% alcohol. It’s precise and structured, ideal with seafood or vegetables and built for graceful mid-term aging.

Emrich-Schonleber is one of the top estates of the Nahe, and indeed all of Germany. Family-run, they were established in the upper Nahe village of Monzigen over 250 years ago.

The Nahe is known for three things: Dönnhoff, Schaefer-Fröhlich and Emrich-Schönleber. The first two have been sought out here in the states for decades, while the latter has been mostly off of the radar, except for in-the-know German wine drinkers.

What is so fascinating about the Nahe in general is its diversity. They have an amalgamation of soil types, elevations, and aspects to work with, allowing for dynamic wines from every producer. Those three mentioned above encapsulate those differences perfectly. The first two fall on opposite sides of the style spectrum between opulence and cut. E-M falls squarely in between.

Their northerly collection of vineyards, on several isolated hillsides just south of the Mosel, allows for a cooler micro-climate and a razor-sharp backbone of acidity. At the same time, the intensity of the sun, captured in the photo above means fully ripened fruit, capable of incredible power. Coupling the acid and density, makes for a perfectly balanced style between the other two, more famous names and one that is sure to find fans from both camps.

"The 2021 Monzingen Riesling trocken Frühtau is clear, precise and more filigreed on the nose that shows bright fruit intermingled with stony, herbal and stewed champignon aromas as well as notes of parsley and, stunningly enough, oyster shell. On the palate, this is a coolish, elegant, persistently saline and persistent dry Riesling that matches many lighter dishes based on mussels, oysters, fish and vegetable. A fabulous, very stimulating and refined dry Riesling from the Frühlingspätzchen. Natural cork. 12% stated alcohol." -Stephan Reinhardt
