Sancerre is is an unstoppable force. And yet, it's totally underrated.
How can that be?
Well, sure: it's a wine people ask for by name more than any other except, probably, Champagne. It's so popular in fact, that for the last couple of summers we've been at risk of running out when our producers were between vintages!
But most people ask for it by name mostly because they want something crisp, reliably delicious on its own or good with a variety of foods.
And that's fair. Sancerre is all those things.
But it's so much more besides. It's a region of incredible terroirs, with rocky soils of alternating limestones, flint and clay, with similarities and points of contrast to many of Burgundy's most famous.
It's a red wine. It's one of the greatest rosés. And it is a white wine that, like all the great wines of the world, expresses its particular site in beautiful ways, develops complexity with exposure to air, and matures into something sublime.
