Frédéric Mugnier's Musigny is the crown jewel of his Chambolle holdings. The 2015 comes from old vines in the Grand Cru's southeast corner, where the domaine is among the largest landholders.

Farming is low-intervention and harvests are by hand. Fermentation occurs in open wooden vats, followed by 16 months in mostly older oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

JF (Freddy) Mugnier needs no introduction to Burgundy fanatics: for several decades now he has been crafting some of the finest examples of Chambolle ever made. A quiet and thoughtful person, his wines mirror the grace and charm that Freddy exudes. A visit to the Chateau Chambolle to chat and taste with him is easily one of the highlights of any of our wine travels.

All of Freddy's Chambolle offerings are the pinnacle of their appellations.

"Here too the restrained and wonderfully elegant nose is kaleidoscopically spicy with its aromas of soy, hoisin, exotic tea and airy dark berry fruit. The rich, powerful and enveloping larger-scaled flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract while delivering superb length on the impressively persistent Zen-like finish."

"Readers may remember my admiration for the 2015 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru shortly after it was bottled. Today, as the wine is released onto the market, my enthusiasm is undiminished, as the wine is showing superbly, unfurling in the glass with a deep bouquet of cherries, raspberries, rose petals, exotic spices, orange rind and hints of smoked duck and forest floor. Full-bodied, deep and layered, it's seamless and complete, with terrific concentration, powdery tannins and lively animating acids that come together in an effortless ensemble. Concluding with a broad, expansive finish, five years in Mugnier's cellars before release haven't brought the wine to anywhere near its ultimate peak, but they have at least given a sense of the direction of travel!" -William Kelley
