Berthaut-Gerbet’s 2015 Échezeaux Grand Cru comes from a small parcel in Flagey-Échezeaux, farmed sustainably by a family with deep Côte de Nuits roots. The wine was vinified with 50% whole clusters and aged in 50% new oak.

It shows mineral tension and structured finesse, balancing red berry fruit with floral lift and spice. A distinctive, age-worthy expression of this storied Grand Cru site.

Since her first vintage in 2013 Amelie Berthaut and her husband Nicolas Faure have built this domaine into one of the finest on the Cote d'Or. An only child, she inherited all of the vineyards from both her mother and father. The young couple farm 16 hectares - mostly in Fixin and the Hautes-Cotes de Nuits and smaller parcels in Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot and Vosne-Romanee.

Her wines are sublime, elegant and refined. The lutte-raisonnee farming is superb and Nicolas spends a lot of time on their back-vintage tractor. Fermentation takes place in concrete, then in barrel for the malolactic fermentation and the remainder of aging in the very cold cellar. There is a maximum of 20% new oak for the village level wines, some of the top cuvees may see 50% but not always.

"A pungent nose of reduction and wood toast is hard to assess today. Otherwise there is excellent richness to the relatively full-bodied, sappy and highly seductive medium weight plus flavors that are shaped by a firm and ripe tannic spine on the impressively persistent finish. This is still very primary and is clearly going to require at least 7 to 8 years of age to be approachable." -Allen Meadows

"Medium ruby. A bit less unrelievedly black on the nose than most of these 2015s, offering scents of raspberry, flowers, spices and musky smoky oak. Suave, sweet and fine-grained; a very supple, unforced grand cru with considerable chocolatey ripeness. Still a bit reduced but this wine already makes the Clos Vougeot look a bit muscular and foursquare by comparison. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and suave, lingering fruit." -Stephen Tanzer

"The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru is matured in 50% new oak and with around 50% whole bunch. It has an outstanding, stony, mineral-driven bouquet that is beautifully defined and yet still very intense: raspberry, wild strawberry and a hint of cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, hints of brown spice and cola, the whole bunch component lending the finish a slightly grainy texture and a gentle grip. There is tons of personality here, an Echézeaux with something to say. Superb." -Neal Martin
