The 2022 Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay Premier Cru “Clos des Ducs” is a breathtaking expression of Pinot Noir, embodying the elegance and depth for which this iconic monopole vineyard is renowned. Situated at the heart of Volnay, the “Clos des Ducs” is owned exclusively by Domaine Marquis d’Angerville, a storied estate known for its uncompromising commitment to traditional Burgundian winemaking and the pure expression of terroir.

In the glass, the wine reveals a radiant ruby hue. The nose is captivating and multi-layered, with aromas of ripe red cherries, raspberries, and blackcurrants, complemented by subtle notes of rose petals, spices, and a touch of graphite. On the palate, it is both powerful and refined, with silky tannins framing a vibrant core of red and dark fruit flavors. Earthy nuances, mineral depth, and a hint of savory herbs add complexity, leading to a long, graceful finish with lingering notes of spice and stony minerality.

The 2022 vintage, marked by warm conditions and excellent ripening, has lent this wine a generous fruit profile while maintaining its hallmark freshness and precision. This Premier Cru Pinot Noir is a perfect pairing for dishes like roasted duck, lamb with herbs, or wild mushroom risotto. While its vibrant fruit and polished structure make it approachable in its youth, the “Clos des Ducs” is built for the long haul, with the potential to age beautifully for 15–20 years or more. This wine is a quintessential example of the Domaine’s dedication to excellence, offering a profound expression of Volnay’s most treasured vineyard.

The Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is one of the most storied in Burgundy with roots going back over 500 years. They were among the very first to estate bottle their own wine. But over the past 2 decades Guillaume d'Angerville, grandson of the Marquis, has grown a very good estate into one of the greatest into the Cote d'Or.

Along with peers Michel Lafarge and Hubert de Montille, Guillaume helped turn Volnay into one of the most prized villages despite it's lack of Grand Crus. Sadly Michel and Hubert are no longer with us, but Guillaume, who's a bit younger, is as energetic as a schoolboy. He's expanded into the Jura after purchasing the vineyards of Jacques Puffeney and likely has other projects in the works.
