What is this wine?

Domaine Michel Lafarge is one of Burgundy’s most storied and respected estates, based in Volnay since the 1800s. Under Frédéric and Chantal Lafarge, the domaine continues its legacy of traditional, biodynamic viticulture and classic, transparent winemaking.
The Volnay “Vendanges Sélectionnées” 2022 is drawn from several old-vine parcels across the village, including lieux-dits such as Les Mitans and Les Lurets. The name refers to Lafarge’s practice of selecting their finest village-level fruit—essentially a super–Volnay Villages, often approaching Premier Cru quality. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in mostly neutral oak, it represents the Lafarge style at its most graceful and precise.

Why get this wine?

This cuvée delivers true Lafarge elegance without the Premier Cru price. The 2022 vintage offers generous fruit balanced by the domaine’s hallmark finesse and minerality. It’s one of the most consistently outstanding Volnay bottlings, beloved by collectors and sommeliers alike.

What does this wine taste like?

Refined and aromatic, showing wild cherry, raspberry, rose petal, and subtle spice. The palate is silky and detailed, with fine tannins and a long, mineral finish that speaks of limestone and purity.

When should you drink this wine?

Beautiful in its youth after an hour’s decanting, but capable of evolving gracefully over 10–15 years. Ideal with roast duck, pigeon, or mushroom dishes.

Lafarge is one of the great names in Volnay, some would say the greatest. His wines are sought out the world over, and we are always excited when our allocation arrives.

Lafarge’s home territory is Volnay, though he also has holdings in nearby Beaune and Meursault. This is an old estate that started bottling their wines in the early 1900s. Only Armand Rousseau, the DRC, and maybe two or three other growers have that kind of history.

The wines of Lafarge are magical. Despite being made in a decidedly old-school style—really no different than a generation or even two ago—they display incredible purity and not a hint of rusticity. It is the same kind of magic that Jacky Truchot was able to conjure. We only wish we could get more.

Burghound

"Note: from a blend of vines that average 55+ years of age situated in Grand Champs, Echards, La Gigotte and Pluchots. A slightly more deeply pitched nose grudgingly offers up its blend of poached plum, black currant, spice and just enough wood to notice. The old vines are in evidence as the medium-bodied flavors are noticeably denser and more powerful with plenty of sappy dry extract buffering the firmer tannic spine shaping the sneaky long, balanced and youthfully austere finale. This is almost always excellent and so it is again in 2022.*Burghound Outstanding Top Value!*"

"From Lafarge's 85-year-old vines directly below Santenots-du-Milieu on shallower soils, the 2022 Meursault Vendange Sélectionée has a more complex bouquet than the regular cuvée, with subtle scents of orange pith, quince and a touch of chamomile. This feels a little livelier than the Meursault Village, edgy, its rockier terroir lending greater live-wire tension towards the finish. Excellent." -Neal Martin

"More seamless and enveloping, the 2022 Volnay Vendanges Sélectionées reveals notes of cherries, sweet berries, raw cocoa and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with powdery structuring tannins, it will offer a broad drinking window." -William Kelley

"With its deeper colour and riper aromas of mulberry and pomegranate, the Vendanges Selectionées bottling is a marked step up from the regular village Volnay. The grapes come from four lieux-dits clustered in the centre of the village, touching the premiers crus; they are destemmed and gently fermented on native yeasts before ageing in cask with a tiny proportion of new wood (8%). The result has more tannin and chewiness. There is still a thread of nervous acidity that helps carry the wine to a winningly long finish. The Vendanges Selectionées is no ordinary village-level wine and merits a couple of years in bottle before opening.(CC) "
