What is this wine?
Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Les Pitures 2022 (1.5L) is a graceful and profound expression of Volnay from one of Burgundy’s most revered traditional producers. The Lafarge family, based in Volnay since the early 19th century, farms biodynamically and works with minimal intervention, crafting wines of purity and precision. Les Pitures is a Premier Cru vineyard located just above Clos des Ducs, with thin limestone soils that produce some of the appellation’s most structured and ageworthy wines. The 2022 vintage was fermented with native yeasts and aged in old French oak barrels, emphasizing terroir over oak influence.

Why get this wine?
Michel Lafarge’s wines are benchmarks for classic Volnay—feminine in perfume yet firm in structure. Les Pitures is one of the domaine’s most complete expressions, balancing floral finesse with mineral depth and fine tannins. The 2022 vintage combines richness and freshness, promising decades of graceful evolution. In magnum, the wine’s purity and longevity are amplified, making it an ideal choice for collectors and special occasions.

What does this wine taste like?
Aromas of red cherry, violet, and crushed stone lead into a silky yet powerful palate, layered with raspberry, spice, and earth. The finish is long, precise, and beautifully mineral.

When should you drink this wine?
Drink 2030–2050. Decant gently if enjoyed young. Pairs beautifully with duck, lamb, or truffled dishes. The magnum format ensures superb aging potential.

Lafarge is one of the great names in Volnay, some would say the greatest. His wines are sought out the world over, and we are always excited when our allocation arrives.

Lafarge’s home territory is Volnay, though he also has holdings in nearby Beaune and Meursault. This is an old estate that started bottling their wines in the early 1900s. Only Armand Rousseau, the DRC, and maybe two or three other growers have that kind of history.

The wines of Lafarge are magical. Despite being made in a decidedly old-school style—really no different than a generation or even two ago—they display incredible purity and not a hint of rusticity. It is the same kind of magic that Jacky Truchot was able to conjure. We only wish we could get more.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 90-92
"The 2022 Volnay Les Pitures 1er Cru is only bottled en magnum as it's a small cuvée (0.15ha) and is more backward on the nose with touches of seaweed inflecting the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm and slightly granular tannins. It's not quite as finessed as the Les Mitans, but the finish has plenty of substance and grip. A broad-shouldered Volnay. Give it 4-5 years or more in bottle." -Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"Taut and mineral, the 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Pitures reveals aromas of dark berries, cherries, spices and mint. Medium to full-bodied, layered and lively, with powdery tannins and a chalky finish, it's generally bottled only in magnum." -William Kelley
