What is this wine?
Gilbert Picq & Fils is a family domaine in Chichée, just south of the Chablis village, long admired for pure, terroir-expressive Chardonnay. The estate farms sustainably and vinifies entirely in stainless steel, highlighting the region’s hallmark minerality. The 2023 vintage in Chablis was generous but balanced, yielding fresh, precise wines with lively fruit.

Why get this wine?
Picq is a perennial insider’s choice for top-quality Chablis at a great price. With no oak influence, this is a textbook expression of Chardonnay on Kimmeridgian limestone: crisp, mineral, and refreshing. Perfect for those who want the true, unadorned essence of Chablis.

What does this wine taste like?
Bright lemon, green apple, and white flowers with a distinct chalky minerality. Light to medium-bodied, zesty, and very clean on the finish. Classic, no-frills Chablis.

When should you drink this wine?
Delicious young for its freshness—best from now through 2027. A natural match for oysters, shellfish, sushi, or goat cheese.

Domaine Gilbert Picq is everything that’s going right in Chablis these days.

It all begins and ends with how the wine tastes, of course, and Picq’s Chablis is a delicious, straight up expression of Chablisienne terroir. It has the famous minerality. And it has the bright acid drive that keeps the wine fresh on hot days.

The Picqs do this by taking the whole project seriously--like the best of today's Chablis--investing the time, energy and money to do things right. Pascal Picq (the brother in charge of the vines) keeps yields low with aggressive winter pruning and summer crop thinning. So there's less wine, but it's more concentrated with Chablis goodness. They harvest by hand (rarer than you'd think, in Chablis).

Didier Picq (the cellar brother) vinifies with natural yeasts and permits no oak in the process: nothing that might distract from the terroir or the fruit.

"There is good Chablis typicity present in the form of iodine, seashore and petrol along with citrus zest top notes. The delicious, vibrant and precise middle weight flavors flash good minerality on the clean, dry and saline-inflected finish. This is very good for its level and worth considering."

"The 2023 Chablis Village was assembled for my visit by Didier Picq from 10 vats. It has an attractive if light bouquet with apple blossom and fresh pear aromas. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, a little creaminess towards the finish. This will drink well for 4-6 years." -Neal Martin
