Why drink Grower Champagne?

Well, size for one thing. Grower Champagnes are, pretty much, just that: Champagnes made by farmers who grow their own grapes. That’s different, of course, from the Champagnes made by big brands (Moet, Veuve etc.), who need to buy grapes from far and wide to make their gazillion bottles of Champagne a year.

Working on a smaller, artisanal scale allows the growers more control and can mean less manipulation in the wine-making. And, unlike the big houses, they don’t tend to blend from different sites, so what you get is a taste of an actual place in Champagne, a wine of terroir rather than a house style. Sometimes the growers may even keep their best grapes for themselves and sell off the rest to the bigger brands.

But here’s another interesting difference: growers can take chances that the bean-counters at the big houses would never permit. So Aubry, a fine grower in the Montage-de-Reims region of Champagne, works with some non-conventional heritage grape varieties, like Arbanne, Petit Meslier and Fromenteau. You’ll never find those in Veuve Clicquot!

Of course, there are other things that the bigger brands can offer. One advantage they tend to have is a large collection of reserve wines: wines from previous vintages that are blended into the base wine. Their master blenders create complexity and make a wine that is consistent from year to year, no matter the vagaries of the weather.

Well, Aubry enjoys this luxury too!!
