Azelia Barolo has been remarkably consistent and ahead of its time for generations.  The wine has always been organically farmed, vinified with native yeasts and aged in large, neutral oak barrels — there is nothing to peel back to reveal its character.  The fruit comes from estate vineyards in Castglione Falletto where Tortonian soils present a perfumed, round and soft profile; and from Serralunga d’Alba where Helvetian limestone provides structure and ageworthiness.  The combination lends a seductive grip, classic perfume and approachability.

One of the stars of Serralunga (though actually based in Castiglione and with some holdings there as well) and one of the few in the village to take a modernist approach. For them, it works, and it works beautifully. With every vintage Azelia seems to get better and better at achieving ultra-refined expressions of very specific -- and often very special -- terroirs. Azelia has managed to veer back towards Piedmont traditionalism (the wines now undergo lengthy macerations and are aged exclusively in giant casks) while continuing to maximize purity of expression and accessibility.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2020 Barolo is soft and easygoing, with lovely forward fruit. Pretty floral and savory top notes lend aromatic presence. There's a bit of firmness in the tannin at this stage. Even so, this looks like like more of a near- and medium-term proposition. The straight Barolo is a blend of various sites, including Cerretta, Bricco Voghera, Altenasso, Solanotto, San Rocco, Broglio and Cerrati." -Antonio Galloni

"With fruit blended from across seven vineyards, the Azelia 2020 Barolo has a savory character with aromas of dark fruit, scorched earth and campfire ash. The wine is lean and fresh in terms of mouthfeel, but it also shows the informality of this accessible and food-friendly vintage. In the case of this wine, it finishes with diluted flavors, but you still get the tart freshness of the Nebbiolo grape. This vintage is poised for near-term drinking." -Monica Larner

"Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Impressive minerality on the nose and with subtle, concentrated, red-fruit notes and wild strawberry. Great acidity streamlining the red fruit and with a nice bite of tannins on the finish, while the fresh fruit rules." -Walter Speller

Wine Spectator

"Eucalyptus, tar, plum and licorice flavors mark this moderately dense red. Starts out supple, its tannins emerging as this winds down on the finish. A bit gruff now, yet there's fruit in the end. Best from 2027 through 2042. 1,000 cases made, 340 cases imported." -Bruce Sanderson

"The wine showcases a nuanced array of dusty mixed red berries, including the distinctive note of strawberry tops, and a savory, meaty quality. This combination is underpinned by firm tannins that give the wine a solid structure and promise potential for aging. Drink Now - 2040" -Jeff Porter
