One of our top selling California wines at the shop, Cain Vineyards is truly a Napa gem. Unlike many other Napa producers who abide by the "more is always better" philosophy, Chris Howell and his team at Cain tend to pick their fruit earlier, so that the brightness and juiciness of the grapes are not lost to a later harvest. The results are Bordeaux style blends that showcase rich and aromatic fruit, elegance, and most importantly balance.

"Deep red-ruby color. Slightly reduced aromas of smoky currant, coffee liqueur, minerals and smoked meat. Big, sweet and deep, with lovely acidity giving the fruit a penetrating quality. Has the strong extract to buffer its firm structure. Good ripe black fruit flavors. Finishes with very fine, mounting tannins and subtle persistence. Complex and claret-like." -Vinous

"The 1997 Cain Five, one of the finest wines Cain has yet produced, is a superb blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec. This is a classy, rich, concentrated effort revealing copious quantities of black fruits intermixed with licorice, coffee, and vanillin. This wine is medium to full-bodied, with a velvety texture." -Robert Parker

"We are at the perfect drinking moment for this beautiful Spring Mountain wine, packed with gentle autumn leaf beauty. Itโ€™s elegant and balanced with notes of truffle, mocha and undergrowth yet still heavy with blackberry and black cherry fruits. Winemaker Chris Howell is one of my favourite people in the Valley, always ready to shine a light on viticultural decisions behind vintages and someone who studied at both Montpellier and Bordeaux before heading back to Napa and joining Cain in 1990. They were replanting the vineyard at the time so you have around 70% non-estate grapes, but still plenty of flinty, mint-edged Cain character. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend; with this one of the few vintages were there are 4 instead of 5 varieties in Cain Five (no Merlot). 70% new oak, unfiltered, native yeasts, long harvest from August 30 with the Malbec to October 10 for the final Cabs, giving a full and even ripening for all varieties, high sugar levels that gave initially rich and sweet wines that have softened well at this point."

"This predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon blend could actually be Cain Four this year, as thereโ€™s no Malbec in the blend. Large and taut, it displays tightly wrapped prune, toast, coffee and currant aromas. Possesses a handsome mouthfeel, with full tannins, tarry pine bark and a cocoa note on the palate and back end."
