Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Brut Sainte Anne NV

$6999

The Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Brut Cuvée Sainte Anne NV is a refined and expressive Champagne from the historic village of Merfy in the Montagne de Reims. This cuvée is typically a blend of equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, sourced from organically farmed estate vineyards that have been family-owned since 1485. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in older oak barrels, the wine undergoes minimal filtration, preserving its authentic character. A modest dosage of around 4 g/L ensures a Brut style that balances richness and vibrancy.

On the nose, this Champagne reveals inviting aromas of ripe orchard fruits, including apple and pear, complemented by notes of brioche, toasted almonds, and delicate floral undertones. The palate is generous and well-structured, with a fine mousse and lively acidity carrying flavors of citrus zest, red berries, and a touch of minerality. The finish is long and elegant, showcasing balance and finesse.

This versatile Champagne pairs beautifully with seafood dishes, roasted poultry, or creamy cheeses, making it suitable for both celebratory moments and refined dining. While approachable now for its freshness and vibrancy, the Chartogne-Taillet Cuvée Sainte Anne NV will reward cellaring over the next 2–3 years, gaining additional nuance and depth. It is a superb representation of the Chartogne-Taillet family’s dedication to terroir-driven Champagne.

One of our favorite Champagnes at this price point.

"Alexandre Chartogne's NV Brut Sainte Anne (based on the 2014 vintage) is brilliant. Pear, apple, spice, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes all develop. Above all else, though, it is the wine's textural feel and total finesse that carry the day. The flavors are bright, precise and nuanced in this vivid, introductory level Champagne from Alexandre Chartogne. Don't miss it. Disgorged: February 2016. Dosage is 6.5 grams per Liter." —Antonio Galloni

"The latest installment of one of my favorite “intro-level” Champagnes, the Chartogne-Taillet NV Brut Cuvee Ste.-Anne Disg. 6/2013 pushes the qualitative element even beyond what I recall under this label from two or three years ago, and must be counted (relative to its appellation) as a sensational value. A haunting nose of ocean spray with clam and oyster liquor anticipates the mouthwateringly saline, mysteriously meaty and seaweed-tinged aspects of a polished palate that’s also informed by luscious, pit-tinged white peach, fresh lemon and almond. (And were it not for that last trio, here would surely be one of those wondrous instances where you find yourself asking how a wine’s flavors can possibly come from grapes!) Ultra-juicy and palate- as well as saliva gland-massaging, the finish here left me licking my lips in anticipation of the next sip. What’s more, this cuvee is among the most versatile at table of any in Champagne. Feel free to follow the current disgorgement for 2-3 years. The blend, by the way, is 60-40 Chardonnay-Pinot and features vintage 2010 with 40% from 2009 and 2008." —David Schildknecht

More about Chartogne-Taillet

Chartogne-Taillet is one of the essential estates of the grower Champagne movement They produce some of the region's most ridiculously delicious, highly-coveted wines.

Chartogne-Taillet is based in the village of Merfy. Just a short drive from Reims and Grand Crus like Verzy and Verzenay, Merfy is in an obscure sub-zone known as the Massif de Saint-Thierry. First planted in the 7th century, soils here are rich in clay, sand, and pure chalk, and are planted to all three major Champagne grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Since 2006, the estate has been run by the brilliant Alexandre Chartogne. Maniacally obsessed with translating his terroirs into the glass, Alexandre trained under none other than the iconic Anselme Selosse. You can feel Selosse's influence in the alluring tension between richness and cut that define these wines.

The estate has been practicing organic viticulture since 2002; since Alexandre’s arrival, it has moved even deeper into natural farming. Chickens and sheep roam freely in the vines to control pests and weeds. Half of the rows are left to grow cover crops, and half are plowed by horse to avoid the soil becoming compacted. Harvest is done by hand and the wines are vinified and aged in neutral oak barrels of varying sizes and shapes.
