Château de Fargues, owned by the Lur-Saluces family since 1472, produces Sauternes only in top vintages. The 2004 is made from botrytis-affected Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, grown on gravel and clay over limestone.

Fermented and aged nearly three years in oak (25–30% new), it was bottled unfined and unfiltered. In 375ml, it offers classic Sauternes richness—honeyed fruit, marmalade complexity, and balanced acidity.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 95
"The 2004 Chateau de Fargues is a fantastic wine for the vintage and should not be overlooked. It boasts a heavenly bouquet with touches of white chocolate, dried honey, marmalade and quince that opens exuberantly with aeration. The palate is extremely well-balanced with a fine line of acidity. There is certainly very good weight here, similar to the Doisy-Vedrines, albeit packed with greater sophistication and breeding. It builds gloriously in the mouth toward its tender praline and honey finish, which lingers long in the mouth. This is a superb and perhaps overlooked Chateau de Fargues." -Robert Parker

What importer Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine...

While Château d’Yquem was sold to LVMH in the late 1990s, Château de Fargues remains under the control of the Lur-Saluces family, with Alexandre’s friendly and highly capable son Philippe at the helm today. Their lone wine is produced from 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, harvested with meticulous care to only include pristinely botrytized fruit, with yields averaging less than a glass of wine per vine. It is aged for two full years in one-third new oak barrels, then six further months in stainless steel to assemble; fining and filtration are never employed. Emphasizing focus over ultra-richness, Château de Fargues is an elegant, streamlined, varietally expressive Sauternes with outstanding longevity.
