What is this wine?
Ciro Picariello, based in Summonte in Campania’s Irpinia hills, is best known as a master of Fiano, but he also produces tiny amounts of sparkling wine with the same precision and authenticity. Brut Contadino Sboccato is a traditional-method sparkling Fiano, made from organically farmed high-altitude vineyards on volcanic and limestone soils. Aged on the lees and then disgorged (sboccato), it combines Picariello’s trademark mineral purity with lively bubbles. The 2022 vintage produced whites of clarity and freshness—perfect for sparkling Fiano.

Why get this wine?
This is a rare sparkling wine from one of southern Italy’s top white wine artisans, offering both regional authenticity and surprising finesse. For fans of grower Champagne or Italian metodo classico wines (like from Trento or Franciacorta), it’s a fascinating discovery—crisp, mineral, and utterly distinctive.

What does this wine taste like?
Lemon zest, green apple, and pear with notes of almond, herbs, and smoky volcanic minerality. Fine mousse, vibrant acidity, and a dry, saline finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Best 2024–2028. Perfect as an aperitif, with oysters, fritto misto, or mozzarella di bufala. Serve well chilled in a white wine glass.

What are the great Italian whites? There are many promising categories. But an important one that is getting much attention these days is the traditional white grapes of Campania, including Fiano and Greco.

One of our favorite producers of these wines is Ciro Picariello. It's a domaine that specializes in white wines made from high-altitude vines, all native to Campania, grown in volcanic soils. Because of the high altitudes—up to 2,100 feet above sea level—it takes a long time for the grapes to get ripe, and they develop wonderful depth while preserving their natural acidities. With very minimal work in the cellar (natural fermentation, minimal sulfur), the pure essence of these grape varieties and their volcanic terroirs shines through in bottle.

How good are these wines? Very good! With fruit, minerality, verve, and that special sense of terroir, you can compare them without shame to the great whites of Burgundy, the Loire, or the Mosel.
