From the importer: Domaine du Pélican has been farming this En Barbi parcel since 2012 with particular interest. It is a south-facing plot, sheltered from the winds due to its location at the end of an amphitheater of hills around it. Its southerly exposure accounts for its early and complete maturation at harvest. The soil is silty clay over grey marls, resulting in excellent drainage and low risk of hydric stress. En Barbi was replanted by the previous farmer and the vines are now approximately 15 years old.

For several years, they have been vinifying En Barbi separately from the other Chardonnay plots, to taste it as "single vineyard" during aging. In 2016 and 2017 this experiment became official once they decided to bottle approximately 300 magnums of it as a single vineyard. After two vintages under their belt and perfect conditions in 2018, they bottled the first release of En Barbi Chardonnay in bottles and magnums.

The wine is aged in 350L and 500L barrels (50% of total); 30% in foudre (large oak cask) and 20% in vats.

The soil in the parcel of “En Barbi” is Jurassic marl, so rich in limestone that it appears white. Francois Duvivier believes that the presence of such a large amount of marl in the soil contributes to wines with more minerality, volume, and length than a “classic” soil of clay and limestone. He describes the balance between the soil type (marl) and the exposure (south) being the main factors behind “En Barbi”'s uniqueness as a plot.

The total size of the En Barbi parcel is 1.8 hectare but only 1ha of it is Chardonnay - the rest is Savagnin, Trousseau, and some Poulsard.

If you drink Burgundy, you might have heard of a little estate in Volnay called Domaine Marquis d'Angerville, producing some of the most sought after wines in all of Burgundy. What you may not know is the inspirational story of how one meal changed and inspired Guillaume d'Angerville to set his sights for a surprising new venture into the Jura.

Thirteen years ago, Guillaume was at lunch with his wife at the Parisian restaurant Taillevent. He and the sommelier have a routine; serve a wine blind, from anywhere in the world except Burgundy. They tasted and were certain that the sommelier had made a mistake, it was a Chardonnay and they were certain it was from Burgundy. It was a 2005 Domaine Stéphane Tissot Arbois Chardonnay.

Guillaume hadn't thought of the Jura much other than a place of a million pine trees, Comté cheese, and Morteau sausage. It's a cold place in the foothills of the Alps on the border with Switzerland. He decided it was time for him to investigate the region of Jura in depth. He set off with his estate manager François Duvivier from the D'Angerville family's estate in Volnay.

They spent five years looking at properties for sale and learning about the Jura. Guillaume works with a geologist named Yves Herody. All of the properties they looked at were assessed by him. The vineyards had to have many distinct attributes, correct exposure to the sun, good drainage and the proper soils.

In 2012 they finally found an estate near Arbois that had been farmed organically. It had mature Pinot Noir, Poulsard, Trousseau, Chardonnay and Savagnin vines. Soon after the sale was complete they found a second property of five hectares in Arbois that had never been treated with chemicals. Domaine du Pelican was founded then and there in the hamlet of Montigny-les-Arsures.

In time, Guillaume was able to purchase a third property—that of famed Jura vigneron Jacques Puffeney who was ready to retire. Not only did he acquire a great estate, he started a long friendship with one of the most respected and experienced vignerons in the region. These wines bring a certain Burgundian elegance to balance the wildness that is so indicative of the Jura, and they are only getting better year after year.

"The 2018 Arbois Chardonnay En Barbi races out of the glass with a stunning display of energy and mineral-drenched energy. Lemon oil, white flowers, almond, chamomile and crushed rocks are some of the many notes that infuse the 2018 with tons of character. Ample and yet sculpted, the 2018 is a wine of total class. In this lineup, the En Barbi is marked by a brilliant aromatic upper register. In a word: dazzling!" -Vinous
