Domaine Hubert Lignier does things the right way--their way--from farming to fermentation to élevage. They practice "sensible combat" (lutte raisonnee) in the vineyards and don't use herbicides. Their wines are organic but not certified. They don't have to be. They don't need to pay some outsider to come in and tell them what to do. They don't give a damn and the wines are proof of their greatness. Use of new oak barrels is low--up to 50% on the Grand Crus Charmes Chambertin and Clos de la Roche.
What importer Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine...
Since 2009, the Lignier family has purchased grapes from a half-hectare parcel in this well-positioned vineyard just below premier cru Clos Sorbé on the slope in southern Morey-Saint-Denis. Its 40-year-old vines, which the Ligniers manage during the growing season and at harvest, produce a lithe, energetic wine that leans toward Chambolle-Musigny in its overall graceful character, but with a textbook Morey-Saint-Denis savory underpinning.
