What is this wine?
Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes 2022 is a benchmark Burgundy from one of Volnay’s greatest terroirs and most revered traditional domaines. The Lafarge family, whose winemaking roots in Volnay date to the 19th century, farms biodynamically and vinifies with native yeasts and minimal intervention. Clos des Chênes sits high on Volnay’s slope, where thin, stony limestone soils yield wines of intensity, structure, and profound aging potential. The 2022 vintage, generous yet balanced, was aged in old French oak barrels to preserve purity and terroir expression.

Why get this wine?
This is one of the most collectible and ageworthy wines in the Lafarge cellar — a Grand Cru in all but name. It combines Clos des Chênes’ natural power and grip with Lafarge’s signature finesse and transparency. The 2022 vintage captures perfect equilibrium: ripe red fruit, supple tannins, and limestone-driven precision. It’s a wine that will reward decades of cellaring and represents Volnay at its most noble.

What does this wine taste like?
Intense and refined, with aromas of red cherry, raspberry, violet, and crushed stone. The palate is concentrated yet elegant, with fine tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, mineral finish that builds in complexity.

When should you drink this wine?
Drink 2030–2050. Decant if opened young. Ideal with duck, lamb, or truffle-infused dishes. This is Volnay at its most profound and ageworthy.

Lafarge is one of the great names in Volnay, some would say the greatest. His wines are sought out the world over, and we are always excited when our allocation arrives.

Lafarge’s home territory is Volnay, though he also has holdings in nearby Beaune and Meursault. This is an old estate that started bottling their wines in the early 1900s. Only Armand Rousseau, the DRC, and maybe two or three other growers have that kind of history.

The wines of Lafarge are magical. Despite being made in a decidedly old-school style—really no different than a generation or even two ago—they display incredible purity and not a hint of rusticity. It is the same kind of magic that Jacky Truchot was able to conjure. We only wish we could get more.

Burghound

"Note: from 45+ year old vines that sit just above Champans. This is also quite spicy with its aromas of purple fruit, wet stone, newly turned earth and a floral top note. There is a completely different mouthfeel to the voluminous, powerful and serious larger-bodied soil-tinged flavors that also flash plenty of minerality on the built-to-age and gorgeously long finish. This is brawny, but brawny in a Volnaysien way, which is to say more gymnast than body builder!*Burghound Sweet Spot Outstanding!*"

"The 2022 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru was a little more backward and gawky than Lafarge's other cuvées - just a stage the wine is at during its élevage. It is more mineral-driven, but it needs time. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannins framing the layers of red fruit infused with crushed stone and a touch of spice. Very persistent on the finish that veers a little towards Pommard in style. This is a Volnay predestined for long-term aging. " -Neal Martin

"The 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is lovely, delivering aromas of cherries, red berries and plums mingled with rose petals, spices and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with excellent depth at the core, powdery tannins and lively acids, it concludes with a broad, persistent finish. This parcel has more in common with Taillepieds than with the rest of Clos des Chênes, which explains why it's such a singular expression of this climat." -William Kelley

"Lafarge has a large parcel of nearly a hectare in the Clos des Chênes; it always makes an exceptional wine. Frédéric notes, ' In 2022, the terroirs are really apparent, which is not always the case in hot years.' He coaxes a wine of great richness from this special plot. The dark mulberry and cassis fruit is scented with exotic spices and a savoury, gamey note. The structure is firmly tannic but not astringent, and the finish goes on interminably. Age this ideally for at least five years before opening, and it will repay you with decades of pleasure.(CC)"
