Fourth-generation brothers Mickael and Romaric tend 6ha of vines and 25 head of dairy cows at this certified-organic Pupillin estate. Nearly half the vineyard area is planted to Poulsard (they use the Ploussard spelling preferred in Pupillin), and the result is a textbook example of a Poulsard needing a decant to shed the reduction encouraged in this grape by marl soils. The domaine is three generations old and in that time they’ve acquired quite a following. Currently 90% of what they produce is sold to private clients and very little is exported. Their reputation is well earned from decades of hard work.
What importer Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine...
Pupillin is recognized as the “home” of the Ploussard grape, the lime-clay soils of the vineyards, heavily laden with stones, surrounding the village providing the perfect setting to express the curious and compelling character of this grape variety. The light color of this wine reflects the grey-rose blush to the skin of the grape which then leads to a surprisingly tannic texture; a rough, “sauvage”, lively wine with a big personality. Drawn from the oldest Ploussard vines of the domaine.
