Les Margotés is one of Dureuil-Janthial’s top premier cru sites in Rully, planted in 1946–47 on rocky limestone soils high on the slope. The southeast exposure and cool air flow bring tension and clarity to this old-vine Chardonnay.

The 2022 was whole-cluster pressed, fermented with native yeasts, and aged 12 months in barrel (20% new), then 6 months in tank. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, it’s a structured, mineral white with real aging potential.

Dureuil-Janthial is a star producer in the Côte Chalonnaise, a region of Burgundy that is often underappreciated. Just south of the Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise has the same soil composition as its more celebrated northern neighbor. However, mechanized farming and a more industrial approach to winemaking marked the region for much of recent history. Vincent-Dureuil-Janthial became an exception to that rule almost instantly when he took over his family’s winery in 1994 at the young age of 24. He went against the grain by converting his vineyards to organic farming and by eschewing the machines and instead opting for hand harvesting.

His hard work paid off and now he is known as an exceptional winemaker around the world for both his reds and his whites. Such a double-threat is a rarity in Burgundy. Jean-François Coche once gave them the ultimate endorsement when he said that if he spots Dureuil-Janthial on a wine list, he always buys their wine.

"The 2022 Rully Margotés 1er Cru comes from the same valley as Vauvry, with 0.9 hectares of vine planted in 1946. This has one of Vincent's most nuanced and understated bouquets, gradually opening in the glass to reveal scents of Golden Delicious, Clementine pith, and light, wet, rocky aromas. The well-balanced palate has a taut line of acidity and beautifully integrated oak. The smooth, harmonious finish has a hint of patisserie/popcorn right on the aftertaste. Superb." -Neal Martin
