Creamy, awake and in love, that's how we feel every time we get to pop a bottle of Doyard's "entry level" wine. It may be entry entry level pricing but its complexity and structue far outpace its price point. The blend is mostly from Vertus, along with parcels in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Grand Cru, Oger Grand Cru, Avize Grand Cru, and Cramant Grand Cru. Only a touch of the blend goes through malolactic fermentation, surprising due to the mouth-coating texture, but that is probably due to 40% of the wine aging in small Burgundy barrels before it sees a whopping 5 years on the lees!

The Doyard family has roots in Champagne dating back to the 17th century and starting gaining recognition in the 70's for creating precise, mineral-etched champagnes. The domaine farms 10 ha of vineyards in Vertus and the Grand Cru villages of Le Mesnil, Cramant, Oger, Avize and Ay. The viticultural philosophy employed by the domaine is a ‘non-dogmatic’ approach to biodynamic farming with absolutely no herbicides or pesticides used. Most of the vineyards are worked by horse and yields are kept intentionally kept low, adding to the focused intensity that defines the house style.

In the cellar, all of the wines undergo very long lees aging—a minimum of 48 months, lending a vinous quality to the wines that have become the envy of Vertus. Every single decision made in the vineyard and cellar are geared toward making the most expressive, terroir focused Champagne possible.

WS 92
"Minerally on the nose and mouthwatering on the palate, this polished Champagne offers a plush, satiny mousse carrying flavors of pear, apricot and Marcona almond, with a touch of preserved lemon and a salty underpinning that lingers on the finish."

(Staff Review) Why I love Doyard Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvee Vendemiaire NV

Doyard's entry-level Champagne is a real stunner and a staff favorite. It starts off lean, crisp, and zippy - all citrus and chalk, but as it warms and opens up it develops notes of lemon meringue pie and toasted honeycomb. Perfect for weeknight fish and chips but elegant enough for New Year's Eve.
