Claudio Fenocchio (son of Giacomo) is one of those unsung heroes who makes traditionally-styled Barolo but remains in the shadows of the superstars like Rinaldi or Mascarello. He is just as dedicated to his farming and he makes wine in the same non-interventionist fashion, aging his wines entirely in large Slavonian casks.

What stands out about Fenocchio is his terroir precision. Unlike Bartolo Mascarello, where Maria Teresa blends all her grapes into a single Barolo cuvรฉe, Fenocchio likes to produce cru-specific wines. Tasting through his line-up, we are always stunned at how the characteristic of each vineyard jumps out.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 86
"The 2011 Barolo Bussia offers plenty of immediacy, with plum, sweet red cherry, vanillin, sweet flowers and mint notes that are all pushed forward. In this range, the Bussia comes across as a bit oaky, with elevated alcohol and slightly volatile notes that detract from its overall balance." -Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

RP 89
"The 2011 Barolo Bussia reveals an easy and fresh bouquet that openly defies the heavy, warm-climate characteristics of this often challenging vintage. Wines from the greater Bussia subzone performed consistently well in this vintage. The bouquet presents breezy aromas of wild berry, cassis and dried blueberry. Subtle spice and mineral tones are followed by good structure and intensity. This wine should continue to flesh out as it continues its bottle evolution." -Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

WS 92
"Aromatic, offering rose, peony, strawberry and cherry notes, picking up tobacco and licorice accents on the palate. Elegant and long, with licorice and spice details trailing on the finish."
