Love and Squalor
Matt Berson began his journey in 2003 when in his words he,” was rescued from the restaurant grind by a band of marauding Oregon winemakers”. He then dove in, traveling to New Zealand, Napa, Germany, and Argentina, to work in the vineyards and wineries of some of the greats and in the process apparently discovering the secret of making great wines. These secrets are now employed in his winery in Portland. His winemaking goal is to always express the fruit as honestly as possible while retaining a sense of energy and life in the wine. It is a pretty hands off affair with nothing added or removed except a very small amount of sulfur. Making thousands of tiny decisions is key to making world class wine in the volatile climate of the Pacific Northwest and Matt’s years of experience both abroad and at Love and Squalor are made clear by the exceptional quality of his wines.Of course none of this would be possible without the exceptional farmer he works with to procure his fruit. While Scott has farmed many a vineyard he does not own any and thus he relies on long term partners that he can grow and work with and now more than a decade in those close partnerships are paying off handsomely. He works with almost exclusively organic fruit and has worked with many growers over the years helping them to move in that direction. This being Oregon, of course Matt makes Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling but he has an experimental side.
