The vineyard is one the great cru sites in Barolo, synonymous with richness and complexity. Sandrone’s ALESTE Barolo is grown on the soil of Cannubi Boschis from which it displays the characteristics of wines from this village: profound aromatic complexity and comparatively softer tannins in relation to vines grown in Monforte or Serralunga.
The “Boschis” subzone of the Cannubi has a particularly good exposure to the south and southeast in a small bowl or “conca” that helps hold the warmth in the early morning. Its soils are sea deposits of calcareous clay, not very deep, with good drainage.

Luciano Sandrone is one of Barolo's undeniable superstars. With the Langhe in his blood, Luciano began working the vines around his family home in his teenage years. He's taken some liberties with the region's traditions — for instance, he prefers a slightly shorter maceration — but always honors the exquisite terroir and the local grape varieties. Techniques like organic viticulture (practicing, but not certified), low yields and vinification in large, neutral vessels, Sandrone showcases the purity of the fruit and the land.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 96
"Made with fruit from Cannubi Boschis, the Luciano Sandrone 2018 Barolo Aleste is plump and ripe, but this wine also shows a more delicate character that is its ace card. The aromas are filigreed and fine with dark fruit, spice and licorice. The effect is integrated, and the wine shows a lovely, softer personality to balance out this mildly concentrated expression." -Robert Parker

Wine Spectator

WS 94
"An open-knit Barolo highlighted by plum, cherry, leather and tar flavors. Supple in texture before firming up, with dusty, refined tannins lingering on the finish. This should evolve nicely with some bottle age."

Wine Enthusiast

WE 93
"Fragrant purple flower, woodland berry and menthol aromas form the nose along with whiffs of spice. The elegant, medium-bodied palate offers juicy pomegranate, red currant and oak-driven spice set against an acidic backbone. Taut, fine-grained tannins leave a drying close."
