Moussé Fils is a Meunier specialist through and through, with over 80% of their vineyard holdings dedicated to this expressive, often-overlooked grape. Based in the Vallée de la Marne, the estate has been family-run for over a century, with Cédric Moussé now leading the charge toward organic viticulture and meticulous, low-intervention winemaking. The Rosé Perpétuelle "Effusion" is a striking example of his philosophy, blending Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir in a perpetual reserve system that deepens complexity over time. Crafted using the saignée method for color and structure, the wine is fermented with native yeasts and aged in stainless steel to preserve its freshness and vibrancy.

This is a rosé Champagne with both precision and depth, offering a captivating bouquet of wild strawberries, blood orange, and pomegranate, intertwined with floral and spice notes. The saignée technique lends a more vinous, textural quality, giving the wine a plush mouthfeel while maintaining its signature energy. On the palate, red berry fruit is layered with citrus zest and a saline minerality, leading to a long, dynamic finish with a touch of savory depth. A low dosage of around 2 g/L ensures a crisp, detailed expression without overshadowing the wine’s natural fruit intensity.

With its bright acidity and layered complexity, Effusion is a versatile food-pairing Champagne, equally suited to tuna carpaccio, duck with cherry sauce, or creamy, soft-ripened cheeses. It’s an exciting, terroir-driven rosé that showcases the depth and finesse of Meunier and Pinot Noir in the hands of a master.

Pinot Meunier has always played "third fiddle" to Champagne's power couple, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Growers always liked having it around because it buds later than PN and Chard, which means it's less likely to be damaged by the late frosts that can hit Champagne so far north--especially in the Marne Valley. For growers it meant diversification.

For drinkers, on the other hand, it was an unglamorous variety that often came across as rustic or rough-edged. But that perception has been changing. Culty producers like Jerome Prevost and Raphael Bereche make highly sought-after Meunier-based wines. And even below the superstar level there's a whole generation of small growers who have started putting out really delicious Meunier-focused champagnes that don't break the bank.

Cedric Moussé is a classic example. When he took over the family estate in 2003 he was the 12th generation to run things. He practices organic farming and makes wines that are precise, savory, and bright-fruited, with no oak influence. They show Meunier's pretty side: purity of fruit, white flowers, subtle herbal tones, and they show its terroir transparency, with clear mineral signatures.

Antonio Galloni

"The NV Brut Rosé Effusion Perpetuelle Blanc et de Rouge is a gorgeous, ample wine loaded with allure. The essence of bright red berry fruit, rose petal, mint and crushed rocks is concentrated into this super-expressive, inviting Rosé from Moussé. Moreover, the Rosé is a terrific example of how much these Champagnes have improved in recent years. The Rosé Effusion Perpetuelle is a blend of 80% Meunier, 12% Meunier still red wine and 8% still red Pinot Noir from parcels in Cuisles, Jonquery and Châtillon sur Marne made with a perpetual reserve that goes back to 2003. Dosage is 3 grams per liter." -Vinous

"Disgorged in February 2017 with six grams per liter dosage, the NV Brut Rosé Effusion reveals a delicate bouquet of minty red apples, caramelized citrus peel and subtle hints of licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fine-boned and understated palate that reveals lovely purity of fruit, ripe but racy acids and a fine, pinpoint mousse. It's 92% Pinot Meunier and exemplifies the classy finesse that the variety unfailingly manifests in Moussé's hands. It will be fascinating to follow its evolution under cork." -Robert Parker
