What is this wine?

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey (PYCM) is among Burgundy’s most celebrated producers, revered for crafting white wines of precision, minerality, and longevity. Based in Chassagne-Montrachet, Pierre-Yves farms and sources fruit from top sites throughout the Côte de Beaune, vinifying with minimal intervention—hand-harvesting, whole-cluster pressing, native yeast fermentations, no bâtonnage, and long aging on lees.
The Santenay 1er Cru “La Comme” 2023 comes from a steep, south-facing vineyard on the border with Chassagne-Montrachet. The stony, limestone-rich soils and breezy exposure yield wines that combine Santenay’s natural generosity with Chassagne’s refinement. Fermented and aged in 350L barrels (mostly neutral oak), the wine is pure, textured, and mineral.

Why get this wine?

“La Comme” is one of PYCM’s most expressive and value-driven Premier Crus, consistently offering depth and structure far beyond its price. The 2023 vintage shows excellent balance—riper fruit from the warm season offset by classic PYCM tension. It’s an exceptional introduction to Pierre-Yves’ crystalline style at a more accessible level than his Chassagne bottlings.

What does this wine taste like?

Vibrant and layered, with lemon oil, white peach, crushed stone, and subtle hazelnut. The palate is taut yet silky, showing saline minerality and impressive length.

When should you drink this wine?

Drink 2026–2038. Decant if opened young. Perfect with roast chicken, shellfish, or creamy vegetable dishes.

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey became a star for all kinds of reasons.

Partly, it was because he was an early master of a style of white Burgundy that has now become very popular: less oaky (thanks in part to larger barrels), no lees-stirring, earlier picked, a bit more reductive. The aim is not to make the fat wines that were still popular when he was starting out, but rather expressive wines that were chiseled and precise. His wines do all of this so well that he persuaded the rest of us to go along for the ride.

He also became a star because of critical acclaim, and it was the right kind of critical acclaim for the moment. Way back in 2008 Jancis Robinson wrote up PYCM and headlined it: “Making Chassagne more like Riesling”, capturing the style of these wines perfectly. Only Jancis could make a star of Klaus-Peter Keller by comparing his Rieslings to white Burgundy and a star of PYCM by comparing his white Burgundies to Riesling!

But we think he also became a star for a reason that some may overlook: he has long been a champion of Burgundy’s so-called lesser terroirs, and he has been able to make from them incredible wines that can reach a larger audience.
