Rhys Vineyards’ 2019 Pinot Noir from Horseshoe Vineyard comes from a high-elevation site on shale soils in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Organically farmed and picked by hand, the fruit is fermented with native yeasts and aged in a mix of neutral barrels and large-format casks to preserve site transparency.

This Pinot is structured and mineral-driven, with dark red fruit, savory herbs, crushed rock, and saline depth. A brooding, age-worthy wine that reflects the cool, coastal terroir with precision and restraint.

Rhys Vineyards is a winery based in Santa Cruz that focuses on producing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah from some of California’s most unique and expressive vineyards. They are constantly on the hunt for exciting rocky soils that exist within the mountainous, cool, coastal climate zone. Over the last 15 years they have cultivated seven estate vineyards, six in the Santa Cruz Mountains and one in Anderson Valley, each of which is capable of producing uniquely compelling, distinctive, soil driven wine.

"The 2019 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard is unusually wide open from the first pour, offering an immediately dazzling nose of perfectly ripe red fruits, cherry blossoms, cured meat, river rocks and petrichor. The palate is silky, suave and precise with less weight than usual, seemingly sacrificing none of the power, complexity and refreshing momentum generated with aeration. Echoing the palate, the finish is initially more subtle than explosive, nevertheless ending up at the same amazingly complex, expansive destination.
