As "the Tuscany of Austria", Styria is a bucolic, pastoral landscape of rolling hills and cool Mediterranean influenced climate. Most of the area is still poly cultural and less than 5,000 hectares are devoted to vineyard lank, this is a world unto itself.
Here, you will find almost no Grรผner Veltliner or Riesling, and Blaufrรคnkisch or Zweigelt. The superstar of the south is actually Sauvignon Blanc.
The Tement family have been the benchmark producer of the region for two generations producing, what some consider, the world's best Sauvignon Blanc (don't tell Vatan or Vacheron, but it's pretty darn amazing).
Terroir driven single vineyard wines are the stars of the show and rife with mineral intensity. All of the them are made with spontaneous fermentation and aging in mostly large neutral oak barrels with little to no sulphur until just before bottling. While gorgeous on release these are wines that will continue to develop and unfold for years in the cellar.
