A Fresh Perspective on the Ribera del Duero: The Wines of Dominio del Aguila

A Fresh Perspective on the Ribera del Duero: The Wines of Dominio del Aguila

Jorge Monzón is bringing a fresh perspective to the wines of Ribera del Duero. A world renowned wine growing region, the wines of Ribera del Duero are famous, infamous to some for being rich and bold, often aging for years in new French oak barrels. Jorgé has chosen a different path and crafts wines that  are elegant, restrained and  truly express the terroir.  In 2010, Jorge and his partner Isabel Rodero founded Dominio del Águila in the village of La Aguilera. They chose this village because it is close to some of the oldest vineyards in the region, many well over 100 years old, which is where they source grapes for their incredibly impressive wines.

Beside the the incredible raw material they work with Jorge's has an impressive of a resume as it gets in wine. He studied in Bordeaux and Burgundy and had long stints at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Vega Sicilia in Spain. While working at Bodegas Arzuaga-Navarro, he discovered some exceptional old vineyards in the Ribera that had previously been used to make some of the region's top wines. He decided to buy these vineyards and the rest is history

The vineyards mainly consist of Tempranillo, with some Blanca del País, Bobal, Garnacha, Albillo and Tempranillo Gris, and are farmed using organic and biodynamic methods. Dominio del Águila's philosophy is to blend tradition with modern technical knowledge to create pure and fine wines that can age for a long time, but unlike many of the region's famous wines, can be enjoyed in their youth.

Their wines exhibit extraordinary complexity, leaving one to wonder how they will age over the long term. Overall, Jorge Monzón and Dominio del Águila are revolutionizing the way Ribera del Duero's wines are perceived, and are quickly becoming a must-try for any wine enthusiast looking for something new and exciting. The world has caught on so allocations are getting tight so grab some today while the gettin’ is still good.

Dominio del Aguila Picaro del Aguila Clarete Vinas Viejas 2020 $43.99 |
Many years ago Clarete was a common product of Ribera del Duero, not classically a rosé but certainly pink in color. Picaro Clarete is made by treading a mix of whole cluster red and white grapes bunches in tank followed by a couple days maceration, then into oak vats for a slow fermentation by indigenous yeasts. After about 8-9 months in vat, the wine is transferred to neutral French and American oak barrels where it ages for 16 months before bottling. Any white Burgundy fan should taste this Clarete, blind could easily be mistaken for a Mersault. This one caught my attention from day one. A great substitute for a white wine with structure or a super light red. Something different, interesting and delicious.

Dominio del Aguila Tinto Vinas Viejas “Picaro del Aguila”  2020 $43.99 | The 2020 Pícaro del Águila Tinto is a luscious, smooth and fragrant red wine that perfectly captures the essence of what Jorgé is doing. 2020 is considered by many the best vintage to date. On the nose, the wine is  reminiscent of Côte-Rôtie,  exhibiting notes of smoked meat, violets, herbaceous notes, and menthol. This is exceptional, both in terms of its elegance and power, with all of its elements perfectly integrated.
