Rodriguez’s Ribeiro Renaissance

Rodriguez’s Ribeiro Renaissance

Ribeiro is in the middle of a wine renaissance, and Luis Rodríguez is one of the reasons why. Old-vine terraces on granitic sands and streaks of schist, Atlantic breezes by day and cool nights after sunset — the wines come off clear and poised, more about nerve and texture than weight.

The grape varieties are one of the key features. Blanco Escolma is led by Treixadura, with a supporting cast that can include Lado, Albariño, Godello or Torrontés — a textural, mineral white with citrus oil, fennel and a saline snap. Tinto Escolma leans on Brancellao, edged by Caíño and friends — lifted red fruit, fine-boned structure, a savory line that Burgundy drinkers always seem to notice.

Escolma means selection, and that’s what these are: the best parcels, only in the best years, raised with patience. Hand harvests, native yeasts, long élevage in older wood and tank, modest sulfites — released when they’re ready, not when the calendar says so. They open gracefully over the course of an evening, and they age.

What makes this offer special is not just the cuvées, but the clock. Older Spanish whites are hard to find, and here we have Blanco Escolma 2018 and 2019 arriving beautifully composed — fresh yet layered, ready for the table. The Tinto 2018 has that same sense of calm and detail. You can cellar them more if you like, but we think you’ll find these awfully delicious already:
